Jewelry has many purposes in India. For one, jewelry is a staple in every woman's closet or dresser, as these accessories are used to enhance her feminine beauty. They are essential to the adoration of women. These jewelry pieces are made of gold, silver, and a woman's best friend, diamonds.
Aside from its adoration purposes, jewelry plays its role in economics and finances. As investments, jewelry can also be used as security measures during times of contingency. Expensive jewelry can be sold anytime, anywhere, whenever money is needed. And so, jewelry has insurance purposes as well.
Jewelry, then, will always be in demand in India. Its style will vary from one state to another. The popularity of a certain type of jewelry in an area may not guarantee the same response in another location. However, some basic pieces will always be common among all Indian women. An example would be silver rings.
Silver rings in India are worn on all five fingers. The many types of metal rings can be generally categorized as those with or without the bezel, which holds the decorative stone or seal.
Based on Hindu astrology, each one of the nine planets of the universe has its corresponding stone. An Indian will know of the dominant planet during the time of his or her birth, since it is believed to carry a strong influence on the person's life. The wearing of these special stones can enhance or mitigate the influence of the planet.

Although I did not buy this ring in Galway, I bought it very close to there, in the tiny village of Doolin, in Co. Clare. Some history and meaning of the ring:

The Claddagh ring (Irish: fainne Chladaigh) is a traditional Irish ring given as a token of love or worn as a wedding ring. The design and customs associated with it originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, located just outside the city of Galway. The ring was first produced in the 17th century during the reign of Queen Mary II, though elements of the design date to the late Roman period.

The Claddagh's distinctive design features two hands clasping a heart, and usually surmounted by a crown. The elements of this symbol are often said to correspond to the qualities of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown).

There are three traditionally accepted ways of wearing the ring which may signal someone's relationship status:

1. When worn on the right ring finger with the heart pointing to the fingertip, the wearer is free of any attachment.

2. On the same finger with the ring turned around, it suggests someone is romantically involved.

3. When the ring is on the left hand wedding ring finger it means the person is married or engaged.

Galway has produced Claddagh rings continuously since at least 1700, but the name "Claddagh ring" was not used before the 1840s.

In the other ring I used Crystal (White), Crystal Metallic Blue (Dark Metal Blue) and Crystal Aurora Borealis (White with hints of pink and blue) Swarovski crystals to create the single flower ring.

The silver toned ring is 1/2" (12 mm) wide and is adjustable to fit most fingers. You choose which 1 (one) of the 2 (two) rings you want or buy both!
